The poem evokes the amorous encounter between Diane and a water nymph. The couple is protected by the moon, whose crescent moon recalls Diane's divine origin. The trees surrounding the lake partition the scene and emphasize the closeness of the two figures.

The flight of the bat, Galatée, which moves away from the couple, indicates to the reader that they are witnessing a secret meeting and that it would be wise to look away and step back.

But the reader, too curious, remains. Then, the text of the poem is superimposed on the two naked women to preserve their intimacy.
